Goblin Slayer and his party defend themselves from the oncoming horde of goblins as they try and remove the mirror. They successfully move the mirror and take cover under it so that Dwarf Shaman may collapse the roof and crush the goblins. Victorious, they escape with the mirror, opting to entomb it in concrete.
Later, Goblin Slayer confronts Sword Maiden, suspecting her to be the cause of some of the events that spurred the goblin investigation. She confesses her part in it, expressing she only wished to bring attention to the matter due to her crippling fear of goblins brought on by her traumatic past. Goblin Slayer, while not entirely understanding, promises her he will continue to kill goblins, even in her dreams. Sword Maiden then declares her affection for him.
The ninth episode is out now and we head into the final confrontation with the Goblin Champion and his horde. What is the connection between it, the Beholder, and the mirror that the creature of Chaos was protecting? All will be revealed in my Recap and Review Goblin Slayer Episode 9!
Anyway, this episode brings the Water Town arc to a close. The heroes prevail, the goblins are slain, and they all walk away with more to show from it. The biggest things to take away from it where near the end however.
Hello and good morning everybody out there in the internet and beyond! We start one of my most anticipated episodes for Goblin Slayer with our intrepid adventurers at the exact point we left off last episode. As they begin to investigate the mirror the not-beholder was guarding, they find that it is in fact a magical gate of some kind. As they contemplate what to do next with this likely source of the goblins, the ominous sound of reinforcements from deeper in the crypt begin to surge forward.
While quickly preparing their defenses against the oncoming goblins, a battle plan is formed around leveraging the multiple spell casters in the group and honestly one of the best battle scenes I think this show is gonna put out occurs. Slinging and shooting the goblins, the horde moves on up against their makeshift ramparts and the goblins finally get in position to return fire, with no disregard to their own companions. All the while, Lizardman Priest moves to shift the mirror and the big bad from before appears, missing one eye.
But counter to those strong points, some of the other narrative elements of this fight don't work as well. One major problem is that there isn't a sense of a proper turnaround from the previous goblin fight. This could be chalked up to the game-playing nature of the series. The previous fight ended up going south so badly because the party just had poor luck in some of the hits their enemies got in, while this time they do better because they seem to luck into nothing catastrophic happening to them. Yes, Goblin Slayer makes use of the Goblin Champion by luring him into the goblin horde to do crowd control, and he has an effective plan that goes off without a hitch for finishing them all off, but none of those elements run counter to what went wrong previously. The Slayer is just able to dodge all the Champion's attacks this time around because the story has decided that this fight will go better than the previous one. And seeing the roof-dropping finish pay off and successfully kill every goblin in the sewer comes off as abrupt and lackluster.
Ironically, more explanation might have worked better for the wrap-up of this whole scheme, as Goblin Slayer reports back to Sword Maiden and confronts her with the truth behind this goblin infestation. It turns out that these goblins weren't the ones who killed the girls that initiated this whole quest line, but the Sword Maiden pinned it on them because no one would do anything about them otherwise. At least I think that's what's going on; the discussion between the Maiden and the Slayer is incredibly obtuse at times, with a lot of dialogue circling allusions to quick details from previous episodes that would seem to make more sense now. For a moment, I was under the impression that the Sword Maiden had committed the inciting murders, then blamed goblins to bring the Slayer there, but they're apparently attributed to the evil Sect involved with that Demon Lord plot in the background of this series.
Rumor has it that, in a certain guild in the middle of nowhere, there is an extraordinary man who has climbed all the way to the Silver rank just by killing goblins. At the same guild, a priestess who's just become a new adventurer has formed her first party... and the man who ends up rescuing that party when they get into trouble is none other than the Goblin Slayer.
In this episode, this is all confirmed when Priestess touches the mirror and a goblin village is shown on the other side after the ripples in the surface fade. The goblins in this village are seen using primitive technology and boats, something the goblins of the sewers were familiar with, but normal goblins should not be.
But, even though the geographical origin of the goblins was discovered, there are still more questions which need to be answered. These goblins were taught how to use the portal, and there was a monster guarding the portal, so who is their leader and what are they after?
The party back up to the mirror and divide up the tasks at hand. Priestess does her usual Priestess things and Lizardman creates a dragontooth warrior to protect her while he tears the mirror down from the wall. Meanwhile, the other three fend off the goblins.
High Elf uses her bow, Dwarf creates rock projectiles, and Goblin Slayer uses said rocks with a sling. When the goblin champion reappears, Goblin Slayer moves in to distract it until Lizardman can fully remove the mirror from the wall.
The collapsing ceiling crushes all of the goblins, but the party of adventurers come out unscathed because all the rubble which would have fallen on them instead went through the mirror and destroyed the goblin village on the other side.
Upon returning from the sewers, Goblin Slayer reports back to the Sword Maiden and informs her that the goblins will no longer be able to enter the sewers via the mirror. He then asks her how much she actually knew about the situation, to which she admits that she knew everything going on in the sewers the whole time.
The reason for the goblins never making it out of the sewers is the giant, white alligator I mentioned earlier. It seems that this monster was summoned by the Sword Maiden in an attempt to stop the goblins from gaining a foothold within the sewers, but it came with an unexpected consequence.
In a world of fantasy, adventurers come from far and wide to join the Guild. They complete contracts to earn gold and glory. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first contract involving goblins goes wrong. As the rest of her party is either wiped out or taken out of commission, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice.
A spin-off novel written by Kagyu and illustrated by Shingo Adachi, titled Goblin Slayer Side Story: Year One (ゴブリンスレイヤー外伝：イヤーワン, Goburin Sureiyā Gaiden: Iyā Wan), published the first volume on March 15, 2018.[14] It is a prequel series that reveals Goblin Slayer's past and the events that led him to become an adventurer with the sole purpose of exterminating all goblins from the world.
The premiere of the first episode caused some controversy for its content due to the series being mis-rated as TV-PG by Crunchyroll when it first aired. Crunchyroll has since given the series a rating of TV-MA and added a content warning.[34]
If you were on any kind of social media during the last months of 2018 then you probably caught some of the Goblin Slayer rape/infant killing controversy after episode one aired. Fortunately, after the storm died down and more thoughtful posts and commentary started coming out, most people seemed to agree that largely the problem could have been solved by the various streaming services providing sensible classification or warnings prior to the show airing and only a few extremists were still calling for the entire show to be trashed and calling those who enjoyed it degenerates.
Fortunately, Priestess is rescued by Goblin Slayer and the two then form a partnership of sorts. The story follows the two as they learn from one another, the Priestess learning how to use her miracles to best effect for a party and about the tricks goblins use and how to beat them, and Goblin Slayer learning slowly how to interact with others and to trust others even if just a little bit.
One example that stands clear from reading episode reviews was when High Elf Archer asked Goblin Slayer not to use fire and a whole bunch of other things on the goblins under water town. And he agreed. That was all there was to the exchange in the anime.
